Mélanie Thierry, the muse for Yves Saint Laurent’s new feminine fragrance Belle d’Opium, is the star of a new work by international dancer and choreographer, Akram Khan for the advertising film. The new advert will start to air in the UK from the weekend of 25 September 2010.

Inspired by the creative vision of Stefano Pilati, Artistic Director of Yves Saint Laurent, Belle d’Opium is the fragrance of a modern Salomé, a woman full of ambivalence; fragile and dangerous, with an irresistible beauty and grace.

The dance is a sensual creation to bring alive today the mythic and fatal dance of Salomé. It features the woman as the source of addiction, showing what the viewer rarely sees: the texture of the skin, the breath, the tension. The film is directed by Romain Gavras. His incisive camera transcends the troubling femininity of the actress, oscillating constantly between childlike fragility and immense determination, control and abandon. Akram Khan is one of most acclaimed choreographers of his generation working in Britain today. His work and creative collaborations with the world’s leading brands and performers journey across boundaries to create uncompromising artistic narratives for the international stage. Work is rooted in Akram Khan’s classical Kathak and modern dance training, evolving to communicate ideas that are intelligent, courageous and new. Previous collaborators include international tours with Oscar winning actress, Juliette Binoche, Anish Kapoor, Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hanif Kureishi and Kylie Minogue.

The international launch of the perfume took place in New York City on 17 June. The party was attended by 140 international journalists and 300 celebrities, among them Alexa Chung, Ashley Olsen, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Olivier Martinez, and Whitney Port.

His original creation for Belle d’Opium is remarkable as he successfully captured and expressed in his own language the emotion we wished to express with this fragrance: a woman who becomes an obsession: moving, incandescent, vertiginous, intoxicating.”

Mélanie Thierry said: “For Belle d’Opium, I tried to express a power that was docile and feline at once, a total release, close to enchantment. Something extreme. In doing it I really felt that I was part of a project that is out of the ordinary.”

Akram Khan said: “This project is inspired by the concept of taking away excessive movement, about focusing on the breath and the movement of the breath, the most simple things, the most profound things, the movement of the wrist, the movement of the eyes, the movement of the neck. It’s about peeling away the superficial things and going down to the essence.”

Akram Khan’s long term collaboration with Nitin Sawhney continues with Vertical Road, a new ensemble work from Akram Khan Company and choreographed by Akram that premiers on 16 September 2010 at the Curve, Leicester and opens at Sadler’s Wells on 5 October.

Akram and Nitin’s current production Confluence, featuring both artists, has returned to Sadler’s Wells from 20 – 24 July 2010 due to popular demand.

Mélanie Thierry has a delicate doll-like beauty and is one of the most successful actresses in France, where she has worked in cinema and theater. The enigmatic role she played in The Legend of 1900 by Giuseppe Tornatore is unforgettable.

She defines her style as “very discreet”, which changes according to her mood and to the occasions: “I try to be elegant“, she says, and admits she mixes old basic clothing with something more sophisticated.

Her latest movie is The Princess of Montpensier by Bertrand Tavernier, which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2010.

In 2006 she won the Best Young Actress at the Luchon Festival for her role in the tv series Fête de famille; in 2010 she received the important César Award as Most Promising Actress, thanks to the role of Magali in Le dernier pour la route by Philippe Godeau.

In 2009 she put herself to the test with an important theatrical role, the protagonist of Tennessee William’s Baby Doll, staged at the Théâtre de l’Atelier in Paris. For this role, she received a nomination as Best Actress at the Molière Awards.

Even if she has a basic approach to beauty, she loves experimenting with new products. Yet her favourite still remains a orange-blossom scented oil, which reminds her of childhood, when her mother used it.

She’s the face of Yves Saint Laurent’s new perfume – Belle d’Opium – which will be launched in October 2010.

She’s mother to Roman, born in 2008 from her relation with the French musician  Raphaël Haroche. “It’s just easy to be a mother and an actress in the same time, you just have to have a good organization and everything is just fine.”

French actress Melanie Thierry is the stunning face of YSL’s new perfume

YSL has announced Melanie Thierry as the face of its new fragrance Belle D’Opium. She was spotted countless times at The Cannes Film Festival back in May 2010 but, to some, she is relatively unknown.

Just last week we were star spotting at the launch party of the fragrance; we ooh’d and aah’d over Alexa Chung’s leather ensemble, and lusted over Whitney Port’s bodycon dress, but Melanie Thierry (dressed in a sexy YSL black dress with black satin shoes) escaped the net!

Not for long, though – we predict we’ll be seeing a lot more of this pretty face from now on.

The French actress – who wasn’t born when the Opium fragrance first came out in 1977 – will star in the new ad campaign for the scent. And a new site (and YouTube channel), called What is Your Opium?, will be updated daily with videos and ‘fun facts’ about the fragrance.

The scent is due out in October 2010.
