A glittering cast for “The Dancer” by Stéphanie Di Giusto

Sep 17, 2015       Category: La Danseuse ,News       Comments: 0

Soko, Mélanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel, Lily-Rose Depp, François Damiens and Louis-Do De Lencquesaing star in a film staged by Les Productions du Trésor

The final preparations are in full swing prior to the October-November shoot for the feature debut by Stéphanie Di Giusto: The Dancer. According to Cineuropa’s sources, the confirmed cast includes Soko, Mélanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel, Lily-Rose Depp, Belgian actor François Damiens, and Louis-Do De Lencquesaing.

Written by the director together with Sarah Thibau, with the involvement of Thomas Bidegain, the story is based on the life of Loïe Fuller. Nothing had earmarked this stocky cowgirl, born in the American West, to become a star in the Parisian nightclubs of the Belle Epoque, let alone to dance at the Paris Opera, until she invented the serpentine dance. Concealed beneath metres of lightweight fabrics, her arms extended like long wooden sticks, totally at the mercy of her movements and the venue’s lights, Loïe becomes a blossoming flower, a butterfly, a blazing fire, enthralling the audience a little more each evening. This clumsy, charmless young woman has found her place in the world – she will be The Dancer, even if the physical exertion of it breaks her back, and even if the bright lights make her go blind. But when she meets Isadora Duncan, a young prodigy hungry for glory and stardom, it will lead to the downfall of this icon of the early 20th century…

Produced by Alain Attal for Les Productions du Trésor, The Dancer is benefiting from co-productions by Wild Bunch, Belgian outfit Les Films du Fleuve (the Dardenne brothers’ company) and Czech firm Sirena Films. Having been pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature is also being supported by the CNC’s advance on receipts and the Palatine Etoile Sofica. The shoot will take place in France and the Czech Republic. Distribution in France and international sales will be handled by Wild Bunch.

IFC Films picks up U.S rights to ‘A Perfect Day’

May 20, 2015       Category: A perfect Day ,News       Comments: 0

IFC Films is in final negotiations to acquire U.S. rights for the war comedy “A Perfect Day,” starring Benicio Del Toro and Tim Robbins, Variety has learned.

The movie, which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a day in the life of a group of overseas aid workers with conflicting opinions about love and war. It was directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa (“Princesas”) from a script co-written by him and Diego Farias.

“A Perfect Day” was produced by MediaPro’s Jaume Roures and de Aranoa (through his production company Reposado), and exec produced by Patricia de Muns and Javier Mendez.

The deal was negotiated by WestEnd Films’ Eve Schoukroun, who worked on behalf of the filmmakers, and Arianna Bocco at IFC Films.

With the program set to kick off May 14 with Philippe Garrel’s previously announced opening-night entry, “In the Shadow of Women,” the Fortnight seems to have struck an ideal balance of established auteurs as well as emerging talents. Waintrop noted that the program was culled from 1,623 feature-length submissions, an increase over last year’s number.

Likely to be one of the few Spanish-directed titles premiering anywhere in Cannes, “A Perfect Day” marks the English-language debut of Fernando Leon de Aranoa (“Mondays in the Sun”), starring Benicio Del Toro, Tim Robbins and Olga Kurylenko.
